Steelhead Candy
Although each year is different, during the last few seasons no fly has even
come close to catching as many salmon and steelhead as the Steelhead
Candy. In 2004 and 2005 "This fly caught more coho, silver, pink, chum,
steelhead, and king salmon than any other fly in my box" (Dan). It really did
seem to be what they were looking for. Competition between the guides and
the customers created a problem for the shop. We couldn't keep them in the
store. Better call us preseason to stock up on this fly. We generally fish
these flies by striping them in at various speeds but a dead drift can work well
also.
Steelhead Candy
The peach version of
the steelhead candy
was extremely
effective on chum
and pink salmon.
Hairball Leach
Chartreuse is an
important color to
have in your fly box
when fishing in the
Ketchikan area. In
certain conditions
this is the only color
fish will mouth.
Flash Flies
In saltwater it is obvious
that salmon are
attracted to anything
that flashes. Even
though salmon don't
generally feed
aggressively in the
fresh water, flash flies
can be effective in
getting them to bite
The Kilowatt has all
of the features of an
egg sucking leach, as
well as material that
gives it a flash. It
worked very well for
all species of salmon.
The Egg Sucking Leach
The egg sucking leach seems to be the go to fly
when fishing in the Ketchikan area. When all else
fails put one of these on and change the depth and
retrieve until you start catching fish. In the 2004
season this fly caught every species of salmon that
runs in and around Ketchikan.
