TRIP OVERVIEW
Southeast Alaska's spring steelhead season provides a short window to pursue wild fish as they return to coastal streams surrounded by the Tongass National Forest.
Our Steelhead Experience is built around access. Rather than spending your entire trip fishing the same road-accessible water, each fishing day begins aboard our Cessna 185 floatplane. Weather and conditions determine where we can go, allowing us to access remote waters away from Ketchikan's road system.
After landing, you'll spend the day with a professional guide walking and wading in search of wild steelhead. At the end of the fishing day, the airplane returns you to Ketchikan, where you can dry out, enjoy dinner, and sleep in a comfortable room before doing it again the next morning.
This isn't a backcountry camping trip. It combines wilderness fishing and floatplane access with the comfort and convenience of staying in town.
-
Our spring steelhead season runs approximately April 15 through May 15. These are wild fish moving through Southeast Alaska's coastal river systems, and fishing conditions can change quickly with rainfall, water levels, temperature, and fish movement.
Each fishing day is approximately eight hours and is primarily a walk-and-wade experience.
We don't follow a rigid fishing itinerary. The pilot and guide evaluate weather, water conditions, guest ability, and available fishing opportunities when determining the day's plan.
Steelhead fishing rewards persistence. These trips are designed for anglers who understand that the goal is the opportunity to pursue wild steelhead in remote Southeast Alaska—not guaranteed numbers of fish.
-
The airplane is a major part of what makes this trip different.
Family Air Tours operates a Cessna 185 floatplane capable of accessing remote lakes and waterways throughout Southeast Alaska. Each fishing day includes the flight necessary to reach that day's fishing area and return to Ketchikan.
Flying allows us to reach fisheries that simply aren't accessible from Ketchikan's limited road system.
It also makes every fishing day an Alaska experience in its own right—flying over mountains, rainforest, lakes, rivers, and miles of undeveloped wilderness before touching down for the day's fishing.
Weather ultimately determines where and when we can safely fly.
-
Start the morning with breakfast before heading to the Hook Up Fly Shop, a grueling three hundred and fifty feet walk from Cedars.
Once the pilot and guide have evaluated the day's weather and conditions, we'll load the aircraft and depart Ketchikan. After landing near the fishing area, you'll spend the majority of the day walking and wading with your guide in search of steelhead.
Lunch is taken in the field so we can maximize fishing time.
At the end of the day, we'll meet the aircraft for the flight back to Ketchikan. From there, you'll return to The Cedars for dinner and an evening to relax before the next day's adventure.
No two days need to look exactly the same. Weather, water, and fish dictate the plan.
-
Your home base for the trip is The Cedars in Ketchikan.
Instead of sleeping in a tent or remote camp after a cold spring day on the river, you'll return each evening to a comfortable room, hot meal, and the conveniences of town.
The standard package includes five nights of lodging based on double occupancy.
Guests looking for an upgraded accommodation can select a Deluxe Room facing the water for an additional $800 per room.
-
Meals are included during your stay at The Cedars, allowing you to concentrate on fishing rather than groceries and meal planning.
Breakfast gets you ready for the fishing day, lunch is provided for your day in the field, and dinner is waiting after returning from the day's fly-out.
If you have dietary restrictions or special requirements, let us know when booking so we can coordinate them in advance.

This trip is designed for anglers who are coming to Alaska specifically to fish for wild steelhead and value access to remote water as much as catching numbers of fish.
Guests should be comfortable spending full days outdoors in Southeast Alaska spring weather and walking and wading on uneven terrain. If you have mobility issues this is not the trip for you. Many of our guide locations require hikes up to a mile on even terrain.
You don't need to be an expert steelhead angler. Our guides can work with different experience levels, but guests should understand that steelhead fishing can be challenging and that weather, water conditions, and fish movement play a major role in every day.
Above all, this package is for anglers who want the experience of boarding a floatplane each morning and heading into the Southeast Alaska wilderness in search of wild steelhead.
-
Steelhead are wild fish, and catches are never guaranteed.
Weather and water conditions can change quickly in Southeast Alaska. Fishing locations and daily plans are determined by the pilot and guide based on safety, weather, water levels, fish movement, and guest ability.
All guided fishing is fly fishing and catch-and-release.
Our goal isn't to promise a certain number of fish. It's to give anglers the access, equipment, guide, and time needed to pursue wild Southeast Alaska steelhead in an extraordinary setting.

A 25% deposit per person is due at the time of booking for all multi-day lodging and fishing packages. Final payment is due 60 days prior to arrival. Reservations made within 60 days of arrival require payment in full at the time of booking.

Cancellations More Than 60 Days Before Arrival
For cancellations received more than 60 days prior to the start of the trip, all payments made beyond the 25% deposit will be refunded. The deposit is non-refundable but may be transferred to another available trip date within one year, subject to availability and any changes in package pricing.

Cancellations 31–60 Days Before Arrival
For cancellations received between 31 and 60 days prior to arrival, 50% of the total amount paid will be refunded.
As an alternative to a refund, payments may be transferred to another available trip date within one year or transferred to another angler, subject to availability and any applicable changes in package pricing.
Cancellations Within 30 Days
For cancellations received 30 days or less before the scheduled arrival date, all payments are non-refundable and no credits will be issued.
If we are able to resell the entire cancelled package, we may issue a refund or future trip credit, less any non-refundable costs, processing fees, or expenses already incurred in connection with the reservation.
Weather & Fly-Out Fishing
Southeast Alaska weather can change quickly, and all aircraft operations are subject to weather and the pilot's determination that the flight can be conducted safely.
If weather prevents a scheduled fly-out fishing trip, we will first make every reasonable effort to reschedule the fly-out during your stay.
If the fly-out cannot be rescheduled, we may substitute a full 8-hour guided road-based fishing trip, provided fishing and weather conditions allow.
An 8-hour road-based fishing trip is valued at $650 per person. When a scheduled fly-out is replaced with a road-based fishing day, guests will be refunded the difference between the value of the scheduled fly-out and the $650 per-person road-based trip.
If conditions prevent us from providing either the scheduled fly-out or a road-based fishing alternative, the applicable unused fishing portion of the package will be refunded.
Fishing conditions, water levels, fish movement, and catch rates are not guaranteed and are not grounds for cancellation or refund.
Travel Delays & Circumstances Beyond Our Control
Family Air Tours / The Hook Up Fly Shop is not responsible for missed fishing time, lodging, meals, transportation, or other expenses resulting from airline delays or cancellations, missed connections, illness, personal emergencies, or other circumstances outside our control.
If a guest arrives late or departs early for reasons outside our control, unused portions of the package are non-refundable.
We are also not responsible for additional airfare, lodging, meals, transportation, or other expenses guests may incur as a result of travel disruptions.
Travel Insurance
Because these packages require substantial advance commitments for lodging, aircraft, guides, and other services, we strongly recommend purchasing comprehensive travel insurance at the time of booking.
Guests should ensure their policy provides appropriate coverage for trip cancellation, interruption, medical emergencies, airline delays and cancellations, missed connections, and other circumstances that could prevent or interrupt travel.
Acceptance of Terms
Payment of the deposit and/or final balance constitutes acknowledgment that the guest has read, understands, and accepts the deposit, cancellation, refund, weather, and responsibility terms associated with the package.escription
